BELPER 2nd XV v CHESTERFIELD 2XV

The visitors, Chesterfield, started this match slowly allowing Belper to get into their stride early and after 15 minutes the home side had the first score of the match after the ball was quickly passed along the back line for Ben Sarten to score in the corner. After the try the game continued in the same vein and after some strong forward play, Warren Hayward ran powerfully to score Belpers 2nd try. After an even period of play the ball was stolen from a Chesterfield line-out and was rucked and mauled by the hard working forwards for Phil Shepherd to score on the blind side. It was during this period that the visitors got into the game and after some good play to scored in the corner. After some excellent play among the whole team David Tomlinson made himself available in the line to dive over under the posts to give Roger Morgan the easy conversion attempt.

At the commencement of the 2nd period James Cottrell, straight from the kick-off, made a storming supported run into the opposition defence, and with some excellent support play from both the forwards and backs allowed Val Morrell to score on the narrow side. The visitors then decided not to let the home team have it so easy and with determined play scored under the posts for an easy conversion attempt. Chesterfield, after some indiscipline, had one of there number dismissed, after punching Warren Hayward in front of the referee, who had no other option than to show the red card to the player. Chesterfield then attacked straight from the kick-off with straight hard running by all the team to prove their capability to open defences scoring in the near corner. On the hour Anthony England scored Belpers final try of the game after breaking through a tiring Chesterfield side, - after some good attacking play by the forwards who worked hard all game - to score wide of the posts but on the right side for Roger Morgan's 2nd conversion of the game.

A visiting RFU representative congratulated Belper on their commitment to playing a 15 man running game, and the club coach stated, "Today's performance showed an excellent commitment to a fast flowing game of rugby"

Belper Rugby Club train at 'Strutts Fields' on Tuesday evenings, 6.30 - 8.00pm, with the clubhouse being open. Ladies rugby training takes place on Thursday evenings at the same venue and times.

   

Belpers major fund raising campaign continues at pace with a club calendar going on sale for 2002 with all proceeds towards the 'National Lottery' bid for the new clubhouse and community centre and can be purchased at 'Amberstat' and 'Hair Design', both on Bridge Street, Belper, with other outlets in the town being explored.
