Belper 1st XV 10 Dronfield 12 League

Belper continued their disappointing start to the season with defeat in their opening league game. Having beaten Dronfield regularly over the past few seasons,it came as a shock when the visitors opened the scoring with a penalty within the first 10 minutes. The Belper team then started to win ball consistently and were rewarded with a penalty midway through the first half to make the score three-all. Belper continued to dominate for the remainder of the half but failed to turn possession into points. The second half began with Belper trying to move the ball wider and this was eventually rewarded when a break by Andy Laven lead to a try for Merv Holmes. Steve Dymond converted to make the score 10 -3. At this stage it looked as though Belper were going to ease away to record their first victory of the season. However Dronfield had other ideas. Scrum half Owen Thomas worked well with his pack and this saw Dronfield push Belper back into their own half and three bouts of indiscipline lead to three penalties all of which were transferred into nine points to make the score 10-12. With only seconds remaining a high tackle gave Belper a penalty albeit forty yards from the post. Unfortunately Steve Dymond saw his attempt drift just to the left of the posts leaving Belper to rue not making the most of the possession that they had earlier in the game. Next Saturday Belper face Nottingham Casuals in their second league game. Training takes place on Tuesday evenings from 6.30 until 8.30, all new players will be made most welcome

Belpers major fund raising campaign continues at pace with a club calendar going on sale for 2002 with all proceeds towards the 'National Lottery' bid for the new clubhouse and community centre and can be purchased at 'Amberstat' and 'Hair Design', both on Bridge Street, Belper, with other outlets in the town being explored.
