BUXTON 1XVv BELPER 1XV (Sat 15 Sept 01) N.P.I. intermediate cup Belper welcomed Buxton, an old adversary, to 'Strutts Fields' on a breezy early autumnal day. The game kicked off with Belper receiving the ball and after some tenacious defence by Belper, Buxton stole the ball from the maul and scored an early try with the conversion being missed. Buxton held the upper hand for most of the first half but failed to capitalise on their possession, with Belpers improved defence holding out. Half time Belper 0 - Buxton 5 The second half saw a more determined Belper side take the game to the visitors who conceded a penalty, after some hard controlled play by all the Belper XV, in front of the posts, which was converted by John Holmes. Late in the last quarter of the game Buxton saw there advantage again be 5 points as they converted a penalty through lack of discipline by the home side, which was converted by Greg Fletcher for the visitors. The game continued in the same manner with Belper not letting there heads slip and continued to put pressure on Buxtons defence and were unfortunate not to capitalise on the possession when Buxton scored a fortuitous try after a clearing kick from the full back cleared Belpers defence in the wind for the winger to score unchallenged under the posts with an easy conversion by Buxton. The last 15 minutes saw Belper make some changes to try and break the deadlock with Andrew Laven replacing Anthony England and Ian Yates replacing Neil Savage to no avail. Final Score Belper 3 - Buxton 15 |

| A young Belper team travelled up to Buxton to find themselves facing extremely strong and well drilled opposition. Andy Ryan started the game with some big hits around the park, including an excellent charge down of a clearance kick from the Buxton line, but the visitors were unable to get points on the board. Determined tackling and a well marshalled defence kept the the home side down to just a pair of scores in the first half. In the second half the home side played with the wind and rain in there favour and Belper were forced to depend continuously. Robbie Peters and Craig Tennick were the pick of the defensive effort with a lot of loose ball being regained off the floor, however, the second half proved strength sapping as wave after wave of attacks finally opened the flood gates. Peters won the Belper man of the match award for his efforts and further mention should be made of Rick Bartram's and Ian Davison's efforts in the tight. The team next fixture is this coming Saturday when they have their first league match of the season against Dronfield 2nds. Kick off 3.00 pm at Dronfield. | |
