BELPER 1XV v ASHBOURNE 1XV Belpers first competitive match got off to a terrible start as they went down to an un-converted try within 1 minute, and the game continued to drift away from them as Asbourne took command of the half and at half time led by 31 points to nil. The second half was no better as Ashbourne continued to press using there slick back line runners and ripping Belpers defence to shreds. Steve Tolan promoted to first team action scored his first try for the 1XV and Belpers forward play improved with both the lineouts and scrums being evenly contested. ASHBOURNE 2XV V BELPER 2XV. (8 Sept 2001) Saturday saw Belper 2nds travel to Ashbourne for their first competitive game of the new season. Early pressure from a fast moving Belper side, a mixture of new, youth and older players, caused Ashbourne to concede an early penalty, which was converted by Andy Birchett. Ashbourne answered back in rapid style scoring a try a few minutes later, which was converted. Later in the half Ashbourne then produced a fine move starting in the forwards and moving through the whole back division to score a try with the conversion being missed. Just before the half time whistle Belper hit back with a pinched try by Alex Skivington off the back of an Ashbourne scrum, unfortunately the conversion was missed. HALF TIME. Ashbourne 12 Belper 8 The second half bought a re-arranged Belper side into play with John Tatham being replaced through injury by Roger Morgan, which caused some confusion as the re-arranged pack got sorted. Early in the half saw Ashbourne pile on more agony for Belper as they scored another try with the conversion being successful Fast ball amongst the whole team saw the ball out to the wing with Alex Hornby going over to score a well earned try with the conversion being missed. Belper then went looking for more points firmly encamped in Ashbournes half and were un-lucky to miss out on a win when Ashbourne intercepted a pass along Belpers back line and went on to score and also getting converted. FINAL SCORE Ashbourne 26 Belper 13 Man of the match, Val Morrell. Rugby training is on TUESDAY evenings at 'Strutts Fields' from 1830, with the clubhouse open. |
