Cleethorpes 1st XV 7 v JC Balls Belper 1st XV 0

Belper took the 2 hour journey to the east coast leaving sunny Belper for the tropical climbs of the North sea only to find their dreams of white beachs and palm trees turn into a nightmare of soggy water drenched grass and gail force cold cold winter rain drenched wind.

Could have been worse it could have had lightning with it

Belper kicked off with the wind behind them and found themselves camped in the home side's half for the majority of the the half but every time they looked to find space the narrow pitch kept them contained so with the Cleethorpes side being larger and stronger as a group, Belper found space limited and the chance of the line break via force was thwarted more often than not

Blount came close to opening the scoring with a couple of penalty kicks but with the wind blustering he shot wide by inches on both occasions. Cleethorpes frustrated Belper's attacks leaving it 0-0 at half time

The second half started with disaster for Belper, with Belper's forwards taking the ball on, the ball was ripped from the carrier's hands and fed back to the home side's 9 who spun the ball back to his 10 who stepped through a gap, spinning the ball across his 12s run, missing the inside center with the 13 breaking through the gap created, he then sprinted 20 metres, chipping forwards with his 6 chasing in support. As Blackwell covered across the flanker dived onto the ball sliding towards the line with Blackwell ripping the ball from his possession then both of them sliding over the line.

The referee was left 30 yards behind play being unsighted, his opinion was Blackwell had ripped the ball following the try but it was an obvious try saving move. Unfortunately for Belper the video ref was watching C-Beebies at the time, thus allowing the try to be given and the conversion was well taken from the angle.

Belper then went on to dominate possession but failed to break the line. Dakin, Blount and Smith all crossed the line only to be held up, Cleethorpes just wouldn't give in and did anything and everything to stop the score and in the end they took the spoils in a truly gutsy performance
