Belper travelled to East Leake with the wind howling and most of the team deciding they didnt want to bother travelling, but those who did turn up put on a display of real grit against a much older and cannier team who with the elements behind them came out blazing.
Belper opened the game playing into the wind and found themselves camped in their own 22 for most of the first half and within 20 minutes were 5 nil down following some powerful forward play from the hosts, who used the wind to their advantage, pinning the visitors back by repeatedly using the kick into the corner.
Belper only having one sub, the evergreen Hayward, were using him after 25 minutes when he replaced the injured Wodward, and worse was still to come when Robinson hobbled off leaving Belper to play 50 minutes with 14 men. Belper seemed to gain a siege mentality and with the forwards being led by Holmes and Inns smashing wave after wave of attacks back, soon found they could use their speed and fitness to run their opposite numbers around. Belper equalised with a fine team try, running the ball the length of the pitch through 6 phases of play. The ball was won by Robinson at the line out and taken to ground setting up the ruck. Naylor picked up, darting towards touch and popped back inside for Skivington to smash through the gap created and run 20 yards, then pop a pass out of the tackle to Omara who spun the ball wide to Robinson, who crashed into contact. Watson and Holmes rucked over allowing the ball to be spun wide to Blackwell who fed Tennick who in turn span the ball to the on running Ogorman who went through 2 tacklers popping the ball to Naylor who scored in the corner
5-5 half time
With the wind changing direction and crossing the field Belper's plan to absorb pressure in the 1st half and take East Leake on in the second back-fired but they managed to hold off the home team despite numerous strange decisions going against Belper, they held firm and could have won it with the last kick of the match with Blount's kick sailing over the posts only for a gust of wind to have it skim the upright and go wide, it wasn't Belper's day but they managed to still play well with the odds against them and earn a decent point away from home
