Belper arrived at high flying Panthers 5 points behind their league rivals,
having already lost narrowly earlier in the season. Belper fielding their
strongest XV thus far went to work, taking the game to the hosts with the
pack crashing the ball in well, with strong running from Dakin and Inns who
smashed holes in the Panthers' defence and caused the hosts all kinds of problems.
With 10 minutes gone Belper took the ball on well in the backs with Blackwell
dancing past defenders to find himself tackled short of the line, a penalty
was given to Belper with the home side arguing the toss, Butler took the quick
tap, running straight past all defenders to put down in the corner totally
unopposed 5-0
Chesterfield came back hard with their 10 bossing his backs and the forwards
keeping the ball tight in the forwards were soon camped in Belper's 22 and
looking like scoring, but Belper held firm with some last ditch tackling despite
some cheap punches been dished out. Belper held firm, not arguing or falling
out and soon turned the ball over and with Gray's pace started to cause the
Panthers' backs all kinds of trouble.
Gray was soon to score with Booth dashing upfield, spinning the ball out to
Gray who stepped through a gap popping back into Blackwell who in turn popped
the ball to Holmes who drew his defender, popping the ball out to Gray who
darted down the wing to crash over in the corner. The referee conferred with
the linesman who wasn't positive whether the player had touched the flag before
scoring, the referee decided to give the benefit to the attacking team and
awarded the try. At this point the Panthers' no.8 lost the plot, ranting at
the official and gaining a yellow card, then at that point not happy with
his dissent decided to get a red by confronting the ref with a foul and abusive
rant which found him heading for a early dip.
Despite missing 2 conversions Emslie added 2 penalties to give Belper a 16-0
half time lead with some of their best rugby played this term.
The second half saw Chesterfield come back into the game with the ball staying
tight, and driving at Belper and with 20 minutes gone in the second half Chesterfield
were back in the game following a period of battering play from their forwards.
They crossed to score in the corner, but missed the conversion and a penalty,
and that was to be Chesterfield's last real attack with Belper taking control
again. With Booth dancing through to score his 3rd try in 2 games and Gray
to score his 4th in 2, then Naylor finished the try scoring with a sniping
try following good disruption of the homeside's scrum, causing the pass back
to fall short of its intended reciever and Naylor reacting quickest to dive
over near the posts, Blackwell slotted to give Belper a deserved 33-5 win
