Belper's advertised fixture against Notts Paviors was cancelled when the Notts
unit shied away from facing the awesome power of the 2nds and a fixture was
eventually arranged against Ashby 3rds. Belper travelled to Ashby with a completely
different team to the previous week's game against Ilson, this week saw the
return of the Buzz twins and a debut for Rich Flower and Ant Broderick
Despite all the changes Belper started strongly following a team building
exercise in Morrison's cafe, and a long spell of orienteering for the Buzz
twins which saw them finally locating the ground after a grand tour of Ashby-de-la-Zouch-by-the-sea,
and were soon 15 nil up through great teamwork and free running in the oppressive
heat of a september afternoon in Ashby. 3 tries from the Buzz twins in quick
succession ( we don't know who scored when as they are identical twins)
Capitain Holmes took Laven to one side and explained to him he was concentrating too much on the overly complicated side of rugby, trying to spin passes 30 yards each way and perform elegant drop goals when this clearly wasn't the way Belper wanted to play. Having taken heed of the capitains advice Laven soon got into his game and along with Gregory blocked up the defence and started to dominate. In fact Belper had to keep checking to make sure there weren't 3 Gregorys on the pitch as he was turning up absolutely everywhere.
A try late in the half from Holmes saw the visitors go 28 - 0 up following 4 successful conversions from Griffiths, then a lapse in concentration right at the end of the half saw Ashby nick a try but overall Belper had a cracking half which saw them go in at half time with a 28 - 5 lead
The home team seemed to rally a bit in the second half, and perhaps Belper tried to over complicate things instead of playing the powerful, first principal game that had brought dividends in the first half. Several tries went begging when a last pass was dropped or a player tackled short of the line.
Mikey Wheels came close when he ran from halfway, beating all his opposition and on for a certain try when he decided to run back and try to beat them all again and was tackled short of the line.
Eventually Belper persuaded Spartacus to come on and he reluctantly scored their only try of the half following strong running by Mickey Love who spun a ball 20 yards wide to Mick Laven, who simply popped it in the air for Love to catch and jink through a gap in the defence, crashing through two tackles to pass to the youngest Laven brother, who popped it back to Mickey and then took a return pass before putting the ball wide for Rooney to run onto and score. Again Griffiths boot was true and he converted
Belper 2nds Man of the Match was Alex Gregory by a mile who
had an awesome game and proved that he has a very strong neck which survived
intact despite the best efforts of the Ashby backline
