BELPER RUFC continued their good start to the new season with a league win over Chesterfield last Saturday.

Belper started brightly but it was Chesterfield who opened the scoring.

The visiting centre broke through the midfield and had enough pace to race away to score.

The absence of big hitting Craig Tennick looked as though it might have an effect.

However, it was not to be as Belper took a firm hold of the game and never allowed Chesterfield anywhere near their try line until late on in the second half.

A couple of penalties from Jack Blount put Belper back in front at 6-5 but the best move of the game saw John Lewis held up just short of the line and good support forward play enabled Tony England to gather the ball at the back of a maul and ground it for a try.

Blount missed the conversion which left the score 11-5 at the interval.

In the second half both sides had chances to score tries but good defensive tackling meant that Blount’s penalty was the only addition to the score which finished 14-5.

Belper should be pleased with the win but need to capitalise on all their chances if they are to keep up the good start to the campaign.

After two matches they are the only team to have a 100 per cent record in the league
