JC Balls Belper 1st XV 21 v Uttoxetter 1st XV 10

Belper came into this game in an aprehensive mood following their previous league game at Rolls Royce, where they had been found wanting.

The visitors won the toss and kicked off towards the Hospital, Belper hadn't woken up and were straight on the back foot with Uttoxetter pressing, forcing Belper back onto their own try line, Belper held up for 5 minutes soaking up the Uttoxetter onslaught but couldn't get away from their own line. Inns and Coombes were tackling like mad putting some big hits in, but following a rolling maul 5 meters out Belper tried to pull the maul down and the ref gave the penalty which the visitors took quickly, popping the ball to their big tight head prop who crashed over to give the visitors a 5-0 lead.

This was the smack in the face Belper needed and all of a sudden they awoke. From the kick off Belper pressured the visitor's defence with Dakin hitting the catcher as he landed, then drove him back causing him to fumble, Bullét pounced onto the bouncing ball setting up the ruck with England and Hardy quickly supporting , Lyon spun the ball out Blake who drew the defence then popped the ball back on the switch to Tennick who sprinted 20 meters, popping the ball out of the tackle to Coombes who was tackled just shy of the line.

Belper continued to push, further excellent work from the forwards pushed the visitors deep into their 22 and following a ruck near the dead ball line (riverside) Lyon spun the ball to Coombes who ran laterally to the line popping to Tennick, who stopped and popped the ball to Blake, who crashed in over the line, but the ref blew up for a forward pass.

Uttoxetter came back at Belper as the game see-sawed end to end, but it was Belper who scored next with Coombes jinking past three defenders and out-pacing the full back to score in the corner to level things up.

Belper furthered their lead with what was a breath taking try! Belper forced the Uttoxetter defence deep into their own half following a punt up field from Blake, Blackwell chased down field and as the winger chased back he picked up and took the ball over his own line and touched down to give Belper a 5 meter scrum. Taylor hooked the ball back to Dakin's feet at the back of the scrum, he picked up and drew his tackler and popped to Lyon who spun the ball back across over the scrum to Blake. Blake dummied then popped the ball back inside to Blount who stepped inside one defender then stepped through another and over the line to score right of the posts. Blount dusted himself down and slotted the conversion.

Belper added to their score as Blount slotted a marvelously taken penalty which was from nearly half way and next to the line.

Belper went into the interval with an 15-5 lead

The second half saw Belper further dominate but fail to score any more tries, Blount's trusty Boot expertly kicked 2 more penalties.

Man of the match Blake continued to wreak havok in the visitor's defence, with some wonderful running and link play between his forwards and backs.

Uttoxetter managed a consolation try following some late preassure but Belper edged the game with Inns, Ogorman and Woodward putting big tackles in forcing the visitors to make mistakes and fail to cause too many problems to Belper.
