East Leake 1st XV 8 v JC Balls Belper 1st XV 21 - EDF Junior Vase 2nd round

The week after Belper's 1st competitive loss of the season, a much more determined performance which very nearly didn't happen following some horrendous driving from a well aged lady on the A52, nearly forcing the 1st team mini bus into the scenery en route to the match, fortunately the mini bus was being driven by Craig Mcrae who avoided the accident expertly.

As far as the match itself was concerned Belper's 1st's had much to prove, and the effort shown certainly made up from the previous weeks disappointing performance.

The match kicked off with the home side kicking to Belper and Belper instantly attacked with excellent running from O'gorman recieving the ball from Tennick and avoiding the attentions of 2 tacklers, then crashing deep into the home team's 22, the ball was recycled well and Burden fed Blake who in turn released Gray who was tackled just short of the line.

Minutes later Belper were on the attack once more with Dakin taking the ball on well and crashing into contact with Adams and England supporting well, Burden released the backs and Lewis on the wing outpaced his opposite number then popped and looped O'gorman who returned the ball and Lewis was tackled into touch.

Belper continued to push their hosts with some excellent running rugby from both backs and forwards recycling the ball well. East Leake, from a division above Belper, weren't going to be beaten easily so it wasn't until 30 minutes gone when the ever-scoring Begga stole in following excellent rucking in the forwards from Blount, England and Dakin saw Begga pick up and go from the back of the ruck, break a tackle then sprint in under the posts to open the scoring. Blount's trusty Boot slotted the conversion, 7-0 Belper.

The home side were stirred into action and realising they werent going to beat Belper by playing fast open rugby they decided rough housing would work. For the remainder of the half Leake pressed and pressed with their scrim half making holes in Belper's defence but the only score they managed was from a penalty in front of Belper's posts following some ill discipline from the mouths of Belper.

Half time - East Leake 3 Belper 7

Belper started to work harder in the second half and moved the ball quicker, this time not lowering themselves into a slug fest against a older more experienced side, Belper's rugby did the talking with Gratton and Inns coming on for B'ullét and Burden. It was the ever-green Gratton who, despite his years 60 next May who inspired the young heads with some excellent hooking and battling, following a ball out from Blake to O'gorman, Gratton recieved the pop ran 10 meters and floated a delightful pass out to the looping O'gorman, who darted through a gap in defence and scored under the posts. Blount converted to give Belper a 14-3 lead

Minutes later following some of the same old Inns tackling which caused his opposite man to knock on it was Gratton who sprinted 30 yards drawing the winger in field and then popping the ball out to top try scorer Gray who simply jogged in from 30 yards to score under the posts. Blount made it 3 out of 3 conversions.

East Leake got a consolation following Belper nodding off and losing concentration but it was too little too late, despite Gratton having to leave the field following some vicious stamping, Belper held on to make it to the 3rd round of the EDF junior vase, one step closer to Twickenham!
