Following the previous three game losing run Belper opened their Derbyshire
cup campaign with a resounding victory against a understrength Spirals side.
Belper welcomed back Sissons, Dymond, Hayward, Tennick, Smith, Lewis and Gratton
back to the 1st team following a mixture of injuries and call ups from the
2s. Belper kicked off from the hospital end of Strutts Field with the sun
beaming straight into the eyeline of their opponents, as the ball was caught
Ogorman put in a monstrous hit on the catcher, causing him to spil the ball
backwards and with his support knocking on Belper won the scrum. The pack
controlled the scrum despite Chesterfield's efforts to wheel it. Blackwell
picked up from the back of the scrum, spinning out to Dymond who moved it
wide through the backs with Blake looping Gray and sprinting 20 yards to then
pass out of the tackle to Tennick who out-paced 2 defenders, then crashed
through 3 tackles to score in the corner from 400 yards out.
Belper were buzzing and thought for a second they were going to walk this
game, but with concentration missing for a moment from their very next attack
a poor pass from Tennick to Blake was knocked backwards and the pacey visitor's
fullback intercepted and ran in from 60 yards under the posts and converted
his effort to give the visitors a 7-5 lead.
Coach Barden had a few choice words with Tennick as he ran back for the restart.
The visitors had woken up and were starting to mix it up in the forwards with
their much larger pack trying to take on Belper's young guns. Following an
excellent run from Woodward, he was tackled but his knee twisted and he was
not fit to continue, with Hayward replacing him on 10 minutes. Belper started
to wake up with the ever busy Merv Holmes popping up with darting runs and
excellent support play linking well with back row partner Inns. Holmes caught
a kick deep into Belpers 22 and ran towards the opposition's corner flag,
feeding Tennick who crashed into contact with Ogorman rucking over, the ball
was spun out through the backs to Gray on the wing, who turned on the pace
and ghosted past 3 defenders to score near the corner. Dymond then slotted
the conversion to give Belper 12-7 lead.
Belper scored virtually straight from the kick off, Sissons took the ball
well running towards contact and popping the ball to Tom Holmes who dummied
one tackler then spun the ball out to Blake who ran through a gap and kept
going twards the corner and spun a perfectly flat ball to the on-bursting
Gray who ran literally down the line to score in the corner. Dymond converted
19-7
Belper reset themselves with Barden telling them to keep to the basics and
to stop any over complication of their play. Chesterfield attacked from the
kick off, pushing deep into Belper's 22, and it was Lewis who put in a try
saving tackle following a kick down field and a missed tackle from Belper
allowing the visitors full back to have a one-on-one with Lewis, but Lewis
bided his time and crashed the player up in the air and backwards stopping
him from popping the pass away. The ball was picked up quickly by Watson who
popped to Dymond who dummied with Tennick drawing the defence, then popped
the ball to Blake who crashed through the gap, running towards contact then
popping wide to Hayward who stepped left then right then left again totally
mesmerising his opposition and dived over the line to score his 4th try of
the season from a prop! 24-7
Belper continued to press and it was they who scored again just before half
time, following excellent ball retention from Dakin and Smith linking well
together and taking the ball into the visitor's 22 the ruck was formed 10
meters short of the try line, Blackwell picked up and looked to pass to Dymond
but dummied and went straight through the gap to score under the posts. Dymond
smashed the ball over to give Belper a 31-0 half time lead.
No changes were made at half time but coaches Barden and Boyd re-iterated
the need for composure in the second half as Chesterfield were still putting
the effort in to get something from this match.
The first 15 minutes of the second half was scrappy with Belper knocking on
and the visitors spoiling in defence, things needed a refresher and it was
the evergreen Gratton and Adams combo that entered via the side door, this
sparked Belper back into life with Gratton coming close to scoring on 2 occasions
only to be thwarted by last ditch tackles. Moments later following Tom Holmes
crashing the ball in following a pop off the side of a ruck from Blackwell,
the ruck was formed and Sissons picked up and went from 30 yards out with
a mazey run and outpaced all around to dive over, cheering in delight to get
his first of the season. Dymond converted to give Belper a 38-7 lead.
Belper again did well from the kick off with ball dropping straight to Sissons
who ran sideways then straightened through a gap, passing to Dymond who dummied
and popped the ball to Dakin, who crashed into contact setting the ruck with
Hayward and Holmes securing the ball, Blackwell fed Dymond who looked to switch
with the on-rushing Tennick but dummied and spun the ball wide to Blake, who
smashed through the defensive line to score under the posts. Dymond again
slotted the conversion to up the lead to 45-7
Belper should have extended the lead moments later had it have not been for
some defensive brilliance from their full back who, with Tennick diving over
the line managed to rip the ball away from the man mountain as he dived over
for what was a certain try, it was the tackle of the match and needed to be.
Gray moments later showed Tennick how to do it with the try of the game, the
ball was spun wide from a ruck in the center of the park to Dymond who missed
Tennick with the ball moving wide to Blake. Blake chipped the ball forward
over the advancing defensive line and sprinted after it, catching it and popping
outside to the looping Tennick who simply twisted and palmed the ball back
to Sissons, who crashed into contact on the visitor's 22, setting the ruck
up, the ball was recycled well and Blackwell who fed Dymond, who in turn popped
to Tennick and looped him. Tennick then turned returning the ball to Dymond,
who spun the ball wide to Blake. Blake then chipped the ball towards the corner
and as the ball skipped up Gray scooped it up to dive in at the corner for
a brilliant team try.50-7
With the last move of the match Belper finished the game off with Tennick
making up for his earlier missed chance, the ball was taken deep into Chesterfield's
22 with the forwards working well, Blackwell fed Dymond who darted sidewards,
with Tennick sprinting towards him he stopped and popped the ball up, Tennick
hit the ball and the oncoming defender, sitting him on his bum and dived over
for his second of the game.
The game finished 55-7 and despite the scoreline Chesterfield worked hard
and to their credit never gave in. Belper's coaches congratulated their team
and told them to take this on to their next game this weekend against Tupton
