Chesterfield RUFC 1st VX 15 v JC Balls
Belper RUFC 1st VX 32
Belper travelled to Chesterfield having not played a competetive match against
the Spirals side in 3 seasons, since they had dropped out of the RFU leagues.
Chesterfield won the toss and it was Belper playing into the wind and sun in
the first half, Chesterfield's larger and wiser set of forwards thought they
could boss the game, throwing their weight around and their capitan was throwing
a few extras, with Blackwell leaving the pitch with a cut above his eye following
a cheap shot in the tight play.
Belper managed to take control of the opening 20 minutes with Tennick, Blackwell
and O'Gorman bossing the midfield and it was O'Gorman who nipped onto a pass
from the opposition's scrum-half and looked to be clear when the ref brought
play back alleging he had been off side when the ball was clearly in open play.
Despite Belper dominating it was Chesterfield who struck first following some
poor decision making from Milly, who took the ball in up right then held on
when it should have been kicked clear, the penalty was awarded but Belper didn't
hide.
Moments later Belper scored, following quick hands from a ruck the ball moving
quickly through the backs with Gray sprinting 40 meters to get tackled short
of the line. Tennick set up the ruck with Harland and Bulle't. Dakin the secured
the ball, Burden picked up and popped the ball out to Dakin who crashed through
several tackles to score right of the posts.
From the ensuing Kick off, Belper scored straight away. Blount caught the kick,
sprinted diagonally towards the corner flag, popped the ball out to Blackwell
who spun the ball wide. The centres took the ball on well feeding Gray who stepped
past his opposite No. and sprinted 40 metres to score under the posts, Blount
slotted the conversion and gave Belper a 3-12 lead.
For the remainder of the half Belper seemed to drop the tempo and Chesterfield
dominated, pushing deep into Belper's half and only good hard tackling from
Coombes, Inns and England kept the homeside at bay.
Half time score Chesterfield 3 Belper 12
The second half saw the influential Blackwell leave the field to be replaced
by Blake at 10, his eye was badly cut and the team doctors decided that stitches
and extensive surgery would be required (If not a transplant).
The second half started well with Belper turning the screw, Belper's forwards
took the ball on well and some of the support play was brilliant to watch with
players popping up and supporting one another keeping the ball alive, with 10
minutes gone Belper started scoring, Inns took the ball on crashing through
5 tackles with players trying to tackle him, he then popped the ball to Adams
who went into contact. The forwards rucked over and Burden spun the ball out
to Blake who sprinted 20 metres into space and went for the corner, spun out
of the takle on the line then spun out of a last-ditch tackle to score under
the posts. Blount knocked the conversion over giving Belper a 19-3 lead.
Belper's forwards were coming into their own with their pace and power they
were dragging Chesterfield all over the pitch, England took off on a 30 metre
run looking like he was going to score in the corner but he looked to be running
in treacle as the tackler caught him. He managed to pop the ball to Dakin who
took the ball into contact, Bulle't followed in with Adams, and Burden popped
to Tennick who took the ball into contact again and Harland picked up at the
back of the ruck, stepped past one tackle to dive over and score in the corner
to score his first (undisputed) try for the club.
With only 10 minutes left Belper scored again with the run of the match, the
ball was passed out from a ruck by Burden deep in Belper's 22. Blake looked
to move the ball out through the backs but popped back inside for England who
sprinted 70 meters this time not slowing to score under the posts, Blount converted
giving Belper an excellent 29-3.
Belper also sneaked a penalty following handling in the ruck from the Chesterfield
forwards and Blount duly slotted the penalty, Belper now led 32-3
Chesterfield weren't going to lie down and decided to come back at Belper running
the ball in and it was Belper who appeared to be the tired side, with Chesterfield
scoring 2 late tries and one conversion, showing up some poor defending from
Belper and putting a slight dampener on the game.
Belper's coaching staff Burden and Soph commented on the poor defending at the
end needing looking at and that the Belper's backs needed to concentrate for
the full 80 minutes
