Belper turn pressure into points
Belper RUFC 1st XV 46pts - Rolls Royce 1st XV 0pts
A well disciplined team effort shone through in the final scoreline as Belper
finally showed that they can turn pressure into points.
Defence as always was good with Rolls Royce coming near to the line on a few
occasions only to be battered back with good tackling from all the players.
The forwards showed their usual mobile strength and took the game to Rolls Royce
with strong games from Matt Sissons, Tony England.
Holmes and Coombes both providing vocal and physical presence throughout the
game, Taylors' return to the 1sts showed that positions are still up for grabs.
Sissons opened the scoring with a good run in the first few minutes of the game,
followed by Tony England battering his way through the patchy defence.
Joe Shlong-Blackwell, captaining the side for the first time, as well as leading
the team to a good victory, showed his running skills with an excellent try.
Owen Lyon always a strong player bought the fourth try in just before the break.
Battered
Rolls Royce came out in the second half to show they would not let Belper have
an easy ride but the pressure was absorbed and although some individual attempts
were made by Rolls Royce to break through, Belper defence battered into them
and held them back.
Rob Leverton played an excellent debut on the wing and opened the second half
scoring with a hard fought effort beating two Rolls defenders to score in the
corner.
Darren Griffiths at scrum half showed his individual skill by bringing in the
6th try of the match.
Steve Dymonds' boot was on form with 6 out of 6 conversions on top of his breaks
at fly half to set up some of the tries.
Belper showed their Rugby spirit as well by lending three of their four subs
to Rolls Royce 2nd team, Gratton, Lewis and Robinson happy to help out the competition.
Belper are away this following Saturday at Derby University. It is likely to
be one of the hardest league games left this season and it is to be hoped that
they can build on this week's victory.
