University give Belper a lesson on discipline
Derby University 1st XV 22 - Belper 1st XV 7
Following two wins back to back, Belper visited Derby in high spirits but found
the University side didn't entertain Belper's high hopes for victory.
After 10 minutes of pressure in the opening throes Belper finally caved in to
Derby's pressure with the hosts driving over for a well worked try.
Belper began to lose discipline and by half time were trailing by 22 points
following two further tries and a penalty try.
Harsh words were exchanged at half time and Belper took note with a much improved
and well disciplined second half.
Derby still pressed but Belper held firm with Holmes and Taylor tackling everything
that moved.
Derby's failure to break Belper's defensive resolve led to falling out within
the ranks and the visitors began to turn the screw with Dymond breaking tackles
and gaining good ground with his kicking.
Belper's consolation try came following some fine driving running from Butler
who set up a ruck short of the line which went to the centres who crashed into
the defence, setting up Griffiths to pick up and drive over for his second try
in two matches.
Blackwell converted to give Belper a little hope, however Derby finished deserved
victors and Belper were left rueing their poor discipline. In future Belper
must keep quiet to keep the referees sweeter.
